Telomere Length Analysis Project

Through its collaboration with Universal Pathology Laboratory and associated scientific teams, the BIORAMS research group has contributed to a population-based project involving telomere length analysis in samples from South Africa and Ghana.

What telomeres tell us

Telomeres are protective structures located at the ends of chromosomes. Their length may provide valuable research insights into biological ageing, chronic inflammation, metabolic health, environmental influences and disease risk.

The project involves

  • Processing and analysis of international study specimens
  • Optimization of telomere-length testing using quantitative PCR
  • Evaluation of biological ageing across population groups
  • Correlation with demographic and health-related variables
  • Comparison with metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers
  • Standardized laboratory testing and research data analysis

Relationships explored

The wider research programme explores relationships between telomere dynamics and factors such as:

Age and demographic profileDiabetes and long-term glycaemic controlObesity and metabolic healthCardiovascular riskChronic inflammationHIV infectionLifestyle and environmental influences

The project demonstrates the team’s ability to support international specimen-based research and population-level biomarker studies, involving telomere qPCR work across samples from South Africa, Ghana and India, with correlations to metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers.

Research and Development

Developing Solutions for India’s Healthcare Needs

BIORAMS is strengthening its internal R&D programme and preparing applications for government-supported research and innovation funding.

Proposed areas of development

  • Affordable infectious-disease diagnostics
  • Point-of-care testing technologies
  • Tuberculosis screening and immune-response assays
  • Biomarker-based health-risk assessment
  • Molecular diagnostic workflows
  • Dried-blood-spot testing
  • Biological-ageing research
  • Data-driven diagnostic interpretation
  • Artificial intelligence for laboratory and population-health data
  • Technologies suitable for rural and resource-limited settings

Our long-term objective is to develop and validate healthcare solutions that are scientifically credible, operationally practical and accessible to the populations that need them most.
